Conventions

In this manual, every use of OpenVMS VAX means the OpenVMS VAX operating system.

Every use of DECwindows and DECwindows Motif refers to DECwindows Motif for OpenVMS software.

The following conventions are also used in this manual:
Ctrl/ x A sequence such as Ctrl/ x indicates that you must hold down the key labeled Ctrl while you press another key or a pointing device button.
PF1 x A sequence such as PF1 x indicates that you must first press and release the key labeled PF1, then press and release another key or a pointing device button.
[Return] In examples, a key name enclosed in a box indicates that you press a key on the keyboard. (In text, a key name is not enclosed in a box.)
... A horizontal ellipsis in examples indicates one of the following possibilities:
  • Additional optional arguments in a statement have been omitted.
  • The preceding item or items can be repeated one or more times.
  • Additional parameters, values, or other information can be entered.
.
.
.
Vertical ellipsis points indicate the omission of items from a code example or command format; the items are omitted because they are not important to the topic being discussed.
( ) In format descriptions, parentheses indicate that, if you choose more than one option, you must enclose the choices in parentheses.
[ ] In format descriptions, brackets indicate optional elements. You can choose one, none, or all of the options. (Brackets are not optional, however, in the syntax of a directory name in an OpenVMS file specification, or in the syntax of a substring specification in an assignment statement.)
{ } In format descriptions, braces surround a required choice of options; you must choose one of the options listed.
text style This text style represents the introduction of a new term or the name of an argument, an attribute, or a reason.

This style is also used to show user input in Bookreader versions of the manual.

italic text Italic text emphasizes important information, indicates variables, and indicates complete titles of manuals. Italic text also represents information that can vary in system messages (for example, Internal error number), command lines (for example, /PRODUCER= name), and command parameters in text.
UPPERCASE TEXT Uppercase text indicates a command, the name of a routine, the name of a file, or the abbreviation for a system privilege.
- A hyphen in code examples indicates that additional arguments to the request are provided on the line that follows.
numbers All numbers in text are assumed to be decimal, unless otherwise noted. Nondecimal radixes---binary, octal, or hexadecimal---are explicitly indicated.

This manual often refers to products by their abbreviated names. For example, the VAX 8200, VAX 8250, VAX 8300, and VAX 8350 computers are referred to as the VAX 8200, 8250, 8300, 8350. The MicroVAX 2000 computer is referred to as the MicroVAX 2000, and so on.

Chapter 1
Overview of Installation and Upgrade Procedures

1.1 Introduction

This chapter provides a general description of what happens during the installation and upgrade procedures, including information you should be aware of before you upgrade to or install the OpenVMS VAX Version 7.1 operating system.

This chapter also describes the contents of the distribution kit, tells you whether you should do an installation or an upgrade, and refers you to the appropriate documentation.

1.2 Important Information

Before you install or upgrade to OpenVMS VAX Version 7.1, you should review the information in this section.

1.2.1 DECnet--Plus

The OpenVMS VAX Version 7.1 kit includes the DECnet--Plus software. The DECnet Phase IV product is no longer part of the operating system installation and upgrade menus. During the OpenVMS VAX installation or upgrade procedure, you are given the option to install the DECnet--Plus product. Whether or not you chose to install DECnet--Plus, DECnet Phase IV will not be present on your system after you install or upgrade to OpenVMS VAX Version 7.1.

A kit containing the DECnet--Plus software is provided with the OpenVMS VAX Version 7.1 kit. In future releases, customers who do not receive the operating system installation kit on CD-ROM will need to purchase the DECnet--Plus media and documentation separately.

If you want to use the DECnet Phase IV product, a DECnet Phase IV kit is provided, which you can install after you have installed OpenVMS VAX Version 7.1. However, be aware that, if you install or reinstall DECnet Phase IV, you must purchase a separate support contract.

Note

If DECnet--Plus is installed on your system, you must remove that product before you install the DECnet Phase IV product. Both DECnet products cannot run at the same time.

To install DECnet Phase IV, do the following after the OpenVMS VAX installation or upgrade is complete:

For more information about the DECnet--Plus product, see the OpenVMS Version 7.1 New Features Manual and the DECnet/OSI for OpenVMS Installation and Configuration.

1.2.2 DECwindows Motif for OpenVMS---Minimum Version

For OpenVMS VAX Version 7.1, the minimum supported version of DECwindows Motif for OpenVMS is 1.2--3.

1.2.3 MACRO32.EXE and Standalone Backup

To build standalone backup onto tape, you must have the image MACRO32.EXE on your system disk. Do not tailor off the Macro libraries before building standalone backup onto tape.

1.2.4 Layered Product Availability

The most current information about layered product support is available in the Software Public Rollout Reports for OpenVMS. These reports are available from the OpenVMS World Wide Web site in the "literature" section. Use the following URL:

     http://www.openvms.digital.com

If you do not have access to the Internet, you can find the operating system support information on any of the quarterly Software Products Libraries, in the following directory:

     [README]SW_COMPAT_MATRIX.PS (.TXT)

1.2.5 Restrictions

Restrictions for OpenVMS VAX Version 7.1 include:

For more information about these restrictions, see the OpenVMS Operating System for VAX and Alpha, Version 7.1 Software Product Description (SPD).

1.3 Definitions: A Few Key Terms

You should be familiar with the following key terms before performing an installation or upgrade:
Term Definition
Distribution Media The media containing the OpenVMS VAX operating system software. This software is supplied in a format that the computer cannot use until you perform an installation or upgrade.
System Disk The disk that contains (or will contain) the OpenVMS VAX operating system in a usable format. The installation or upgrade procedure converts the OpenVMS VAX operating system software to this usable format when transferring the software from the distribution media to the system disk.
Local Drive A drive that is connected directly to a VAX computer. For example, a magnetic tape drive connected directly to a VAX computer is referred to as a local tape drive. If you have a standalone VAX computer, it is likely all the drives connected to your system are local drives.
InfoServer A general-purpose disk storage server that allows you to use the distribution compact disc to install the operating system on remote client systems connected to the same LAN (local area network).
Source Drive The drive that holds the distribution media during the upgrade or installation.
Target Drive The drive that holds the system disk---or, for some files, the alternate disk---during the upgrade or installation.
HSC Drive A drive connected to a hierarchical storage controller (HSC) device. For example, a magnetic tape drive connected to an HSC device is referred to as an HSC tape drive.

The HSC is a self-contained, intelligent, mass storage subsystem that enables VAXcluster nodes to share Digital Storage Architecture (DSA) disks.

For definitions of other specialized terms used in this manual, see the Glossary at the end of this book.

1.4 Locating Files on the Distribution Media

The OpenVMS VAX files are stored on the distribution media as the following save sets:
